在纽约工作了一段时间之后，公司管理层对我的表现非常满意。他们希望我能留在纽约，并将是纽约新设立的另一个分公司经理职位的第一候选人。我很感谢公司对我青睐有加，不过仔细考虑之后我还是决定回到西部，而不是长期在纽约工作。
我的最大目标是提高自己的操盘技能，做一个操盘高手。如果选择留在纽约，就意味着我将有相当大部分时间花在行政工作上，而我们公司最高水平的操盘手有好几个在西部，我对那里情况很熟悉，向他们学习会比较方便。
纽约的生活开销非常高，住房相对也比较拥挤，空气污染较重，而我更喜欢开阔的环境和清新的空气，在其他地方同样的收入可以达到比在纽约高许多的生活水准。
纽约的治安虽然近年有了大幅度改善，但作为世界级的大都市，鱼龙混杂在所难免，安全性总让人担忧。
纽约也曾经发生过恐怖分子袭击的事件。不过，我做梦也不会预料到，短短几年后会发生纽约世贸大楼遭恐怖分子袭击摧毁的灾难。遇难的几千人中，许多是我们的同行。想不到那么多鲜活的面孔，顷刻间化作了灰土，让人扼腕痛惜。“9.11”一周年之际，一位朋友给我寄了一首《IFIKNEW》(《假如我知道》)的诗，让人依然感伤不已。诗是这样写的：

I would tuck you in more tightly

what turned out to be their one last wish
